Why the Drug List Matters
Each plan has its own list, called a formulary. One plan may put your drug in a low tier while another charges much more. Plans can also require prior approval. That is why we check each drug by name.
Our Process for Part D
First, we collect the name, dose and how often you take each drug. Next, we ask where you like to fill them, whether that is a pharmacy on Bergenline Avenue or a mail-order service. Then we check how each plan we carry handles those drugs, including tier, prior approval and quantity limits.
Finally, we show you a full-year estimate, not just the monthly premium. A plan with a higher premium can still be cheaper if it covers your costly brand drug well.
Preferred Pharmacies Can Change Your Cost
Many plans have preferred pharmacies where copays are lower. Your corner pharmacy may be standard in one plan and preferred in another. If you want to stay with the pharmacist who knows you, tell us, and we will check how each plan treats that store.
Spread Costs Over the Year
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you split big drug bills into monthly payments. It does not lower the total, but it can make January easier.

New Jersey Makes It Cheaper
If you qualify for PAAD, you pay $5 for generics and $7 for brands on covered drugs. Senior Gold helps people just above PAAD limits. Federal Extra Help can lower costs too.
The government explains this in apply for Extra Help (SSA.gov)(external site).
The Late Fee
If you go 63 days or more without drug coverage after your first window, you may owe a late fee for life. Even if you take no drugs today, a low-cost plan protects you.
Tips to Lower Your Drug Costs
- Ask your doctor whether a generic or lower-tier drug would work
- Compare a 90-day supply with a 30-day supply
- Check whether your pharmacy is preferred in the plan
- Apply for PAAD or Extra Help if your income is limited
Drugs Part D Does Not Cover
By law, Part D plans do not cover some drug types, such as drugs for weight loss in most cases, drugs for cosmetic use and most over-the-counter medicines. A plan may cover a drug only for certain uses. If a drug you need is not on a plan's list, you or your doctor can ask for an exception.
If you are told a drug is not covered at the pharmacy, ask for the written notice. It explains how to appeal.
Switching Drugs or Plans Mid-Year
Plans can change their drug lists during the year in limited ways, and they must tell you. If your drug is removed, you may get a temporary supply while you and your doctor find another option. Most people can only switch plans in the fall, but people with Extra Help or certain life changes may have more chances.
Mail-Order and 90-Day Supplies
Many plans charge less for a 90-day supply, either by mail or at a retail pharmacy in the network. If you take the same medicine every month, this can lower your cost and save trips. We check whether each plan we compare offers this for your drugs.
Part D With Medigap or Medicare Advantage
If you choose Original Medicare with a Medigap policy, you add a stand-alone Part D plan. If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is usually built in, and you should not buy a separate Part D plan, since that can end your Advantage enrollment. We make sure the pieces fit together.
Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
