Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in West New York, NJ

A smiling older couple pull suitcases through a train station

Medigap, also called Medicare Supplement, is a policy you buy from a private company to pay part of what Original Medicare does not. It works with your red, white and blue card. No network, no referrals.

Official details: Medigap basics (Medicare.gov)(external site).

Many people here pick Medigap because their doctors are spread across Hudson County and New York City. With Original Medicare and a supplement, any doctor or hospital in the country that takes Medicare will take your card.

What We Cover:

  • Plan G, Plan N and high-deductible G
  • Your six-month open enrollment window
  • Pairing Medigap with a Part D plan
  • Rules for people under 65

Plans Are Standard

Plans use letters, and each letter covers the same things no matter which company sells it. Plan G with one company has the same benefits as Plan G with another. Price and service are what differ.

Popular Choices

  • Plan G: covers almost everything after the Part B deductible.
  • Plan N: lower premium, with small copays for some visits.
  • High-deductible G: low premium, but you pay more before it kicks in.

Plan F is only open to people eligible for Medicare before 2020.

Plan G and Plan N Side by Side

Plan G pays your share of hospital and doctor bills once you meet the yearly Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026. After that, most people pay nothing more for covered care for the rest of the year.

Check the current rules at compare Medigap plan benefits (Medicare.gov)(external site).

Plan N usually has a lower monthly premium. In return, you may pay a small copay at some office visits and the emergency room, and you may owe excess charges if a doctor bills above the Medicare rate. If you rarely see doctors, Plan N can cost less over a year. If you want the most predictable bills, Plan G is the common choice.

When to Buy

Your six-month Medigap open enrollment starts when you are 65 and have Part B. Inside that window, you cannot be turned down for health reasons. Later, you may have to answer health questions.

Why Timing Matters So Much

Outside your open enrollment window, a company can look at your health history before it sells you a policy. It can charge more or say no. That is why we talk about Medigap early, often a few months before your Part B start date, so you do not miss the one window that protects you.

If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan and want to move to Medigap later, ask us first. The switch may not be possible without health questions, and you should never drop one plan until the new one is approved.

Medigap Before 65

Federal law does not require companies to sell Medigap to people under 65. New Jersey has its own rules for people under 65, and prices can be higher. Ask us which policies are open to you.

The government explains this in New Jersey's insurance regulator, DOBI (nj.gov)(external site).

Medigap Does Not Cover Drugs

Pair it with a Part D plan. It also does not cover dental, vision or hearing.

Who Picks Medigap

People who want to keep doctors across the river, who travel or who like knowing their costs in advance often choose it. The trade-off is a higher monthly premium than many Advantage plans.

What a Supplement Does Not Do

A Medigap policy only works with Original Medicare. You cannot use it to pay costs in a Medicare Advantage plan, and it is illegal for anyone to sell you one if you are in an Advantage plan. It also does not cover long-term care, routine dental work, eye exams or hearing aids.

Because the policy follows the federal rules for each letter, there is no reason to pay more for the same plan just because of a brand name. Service, price history and how claims are handled are fair things to compare.

Our Process for Medigap

We start by confirming your Part B start date, because that sets your open enrollment window. Next, we talk about how often you see doctors and how much risk you are comfortable with. Then we compare the plans we carry in Plan G, Plan N and high-deductible G, and we pair them with a drug plan that covers your medicines.

If you are leaving job coverage after 65, your window may start later. We help you time it so you keep your protections.

Travel and Snowbird Coverage

Many people in West New York spend part of the year with family in Florida, Puerto Rico or abroad. In the United States, Original Medicare with Medigap travels with you. Some lettered plans also help with emergency care outside the country, up to set limits. Ask us which plans include it if you travel often.

How Premiums Are Set

Each company sets its own price for the same lettered plan, and prices change over time. Some raise rates as you age, while others price by the age you were when you bought. We show you the current prices from the companies we carry and explain how each one sets its rates, so there are fewer surprises later.
