Medicare Dental, Vision and Hearing in West New York, NJ

An older man has an eye exam with an optometrist

Teeth, eyes and ears matter more as we age. Yet Original Medicare covers very little routine care for them. Here is what is and is not covered, and where to look for help.

What We Cover:

  • What Original Medicare pays for
  • Advantage plan dental, vision and hearing extras
  • Reading benefit limits and networks
  • Stand-alone and over-the-counter options

What Original Medicare Covers

  • Eye care for diseases like glaucoma screening for high-risk people and cataract surgery
  • Hearing exams only when a doctor orders them to diagnose a problem
  • Dental care only when tied to certain medical treatments

Check the current rules at what Medicare covers (Medicare.gov)(external site).

What It Skips

Routine cleanings, fillings, dentures, eye exams for glasses, most glasses and hearing aids are not covered.

Medicare Advantage Extras

Many Advantage plans include some dental, vision and hearing benefits. Limits vary. One plan might pay $1,000 a year for dental while another pays far less. We read the details with you.

Dental Benefits: Read the Fine Print

Dental extras are not all alike. Some plans cover only cleanings and X-rays. Others add fillings, crowns or dentures, often with a yearly dollar limit. Many use a dental network, and some require you to wait before major work is covered.

Before you pick a plan for its dental benefit, ask three things. What is the yearly limit? Is my dentist in the network? And what share do I pay for major work like crowns or implants?

Vision Benefits

Original Medicare pays for medical eye care, like treatment for glaucoma or cataract surgery. It does not pay for a routine exam for glasses. Many Advantage plans add a yearly eye exam and an allowance for frames, lenses or contacts.

After cataract surgery with an implanted lens, Original Medicare does help pay for one pair of glasses or contacts. Keep that in mind if surgery is on your calendar.

Hearing Benefits

Hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars, and Original Medicare does not pay for them. Some Advantage plans include a hearing exam and an allowance toward aids, often through a set vendor. Ask whether the benefit covers both ears, how often you can get new aids and whether fittings are included.

Other Options

Some people buy a stand-alone dental plan. Hearing aids are now sold over the counter for mild to moderate hearing loss, which can cost less.

The government explains this in OTC hearing aids: what you should know (FDA.gov)(external site).

Paying for Routine Care Without a Plan Benefit

If your plan does not cover what you need, ask the office for its cash price before you book. Some dental schools and community health centers offer care at lower cost. Big-box stores often sell glasses and hearing aids for less than private offices. Keeping receipts can also help at tax time if your medical costs are high.

Our Process for Dental, Vision and Hearing

We ask which care you expect to need in the next year: cleanings, a crown, new glasses, hearing aids or nothing at all. Then we check how each plan we carry handles that care, including the network, the yearly limit and what you would pay. We write down the numbers so you can compare plans side by side.

If you plan to keep Original Medicare, we can talk about stand-alone dental options and how they work.

Questions to Ask About Extras

  • Is there a yearly dollar limit, and does it reset in January?
  • Do I need to use a specific dentist, eye doctor or hearing vendor?
  • Is there a waiting period for major dental work?
  • Does the hearing benefit cover both ears and fittings?
  • How often can I get new glasses?

Care You May Already Be Owed

Medicare covers some care many people forget about, like a yearly glaucoma test for people at high risk, diabetic eye exams and hearing tests when a doctor orders them for a medical reason. Ask your doctor whether any of these apply to you.

Balancing Extras With the Rest of the Plan

A rich dental benefit is helpful, but it should not be the only reason to choose a plan. If the network does not include your doctors, or your drugs cost more, the extras may not be worth it. We weigh the whole plan with you, so the extras are a bonus and not a trap.
